Houston, Texas – It’s an odd place for a volunteer basketball team, but that hasn’t stopped people from finding a way to get involved.
Volunteers from around the world are joining the Houston Rockets and the Austin Spurs for a five-day summer basketball camp in Houston.
It started in June and has been going on for three months.
The camp is being run by the US Basketball Association (USBA), which organises volunteer basketball camps in the US and around the globe.
The NBA is the biggest basketball league in the world and the summer camp is the culmination of a 10-year collaboration between the USBA and the league.
The USBA has a long-standing commitment to supporting and growing volunteer basketball and in turn the NBA has a very long-term commitment to ensuring its volunteers can continue to contribute to the sport.
“The NBA has been very supportive of our efforts to help build an inclusive and inclusive environment in Houston and throughout the United States,” said Houston Rockets assistant general manager for basketball operations Chris Kuzmic.
“In partnership with the NBA, we are making an ambitious commitment to continue to help ensure that our volunteer athletes have the opportunity to do what they love while contributing to our community.”
Volunteer basketball has been around in the United Kingdom for some time, but the NBA is one of the few sports that encourages its players to do a full-time job.
The summer camp aims to provide an environment that is “fun and exciting, with the added bonus of giving back to the community that has been so important to our success”, said Mike Pritchard, the USBC’s executive director of community engagement.
“Volunteering is a great way to give back to a community that is important to you, which is why we’re bringing this event to Houston.”
The Rockets are hosting two games during the summer: a home-and-home series against the Orlando Magic on Friday and a doubleheader against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.
The camp is open to volunteers, players, coaches, coaches and staff.
The Rockets will play the Magic on Tuesday and the Spurs on Wednesday.
