Volunteer opportunities can help families during the holidays, said the Salvation Army.
It said there were over 700 Christmas projects across Australia and New Zealand in 2017.
“Christmas is a time for family members to reflect, to get together and share their joy, to celebrate with family and friends and to share in the special time of the year,” the Salvation Arm said.
For families that don’t have a Christmas-related volunteer project, there are many other ways to spend Christmas. “
A holiday project will be a great opportunity for a family to share a bit of their holiday spirit with others.”

Here are some ideas for those wanting to get out into the community and make a difference.
Christmas trees in a tree house If you can’t afford to buy a tree, you can always try to buy one at a Christmas market.
“The best part is that it’s not expensive,” said Christchurch-based Christmas tree maker Lorna.
“It’s an incredible way to share Christmas in a fun way.”
If you can buy a good tree and the price is right, you could get some Christmas trees to bring into your home.

I’ve got lots of friends who are really excited about it,” she said.

Christmas in the garden If you’re thinking about making Christmas dinner for your family, try making your own.
“There’s a lot of people who love making Christmas dinners,” Lornah said.
There’s a recipe in the book, which Lorni said her family have enjoyed for a while.
“One of the big differences is that I use an egg white, which is not usually in my cooking.
I’ve had some people say they don’t like eggs, so I have a bit more of a preference for them.”
If you want to get creative, try this recipe for turkey.
Lottie and Lotti’s son, who is a keen cook, has taken the recipe to a lot more places.
Lotties daughter, who loves to cook, also loves the idea of making her own. “
He’s also always looking after the cooking, so it’s lovely when he’s in the kitchen and making the turkey.”

Her father is a bit worried about getting any food in the house.
“When he gets home, he’ll go through all the ingredients, and then he’ll put it all in the fridge so that when he comes back, he can cook everything he wants.”
If all that sounds fun, there’s still the option of trying to get your own Christmas tree.
“You can get a large one, or even a small one,” Lott’s father said.
He said it’s a bit expensive, but he’s happy with it.
“What I really love about it is it’s so big.
I can put a Christmas tree up for the kids and everyone can enjoy it.”

They said they’re happy with the recipe.
“They’re really good, so good they’re a Christmas tradition,” Lillie said.
It’s a good idea to make your own for your holiday, Lott.
“Because you don’t need any kind of special ingredients, it’s really good for a small family,” she added.
Christmas cake How do you make your very own cake?
You could always use the recipe in your book, or try out a recipe at a local shop.
Lillies daughter was particularly pleased with the cake, saying she could get away with using some of her mum’s cake for this one.
“This is the best cake I’ve ever had, it was really, really good,” she laughed.
You can also make your cake yourself at home.
“To get a nice, smooth cake, you need to make sure the butter is melted correctly,” Lollie said of the recipe she had just made.
“Then you just add your flour, sugar and a little bit of salt and mix everything up.”
